Resilient CARE is a three-year, place-based initiative supporting local communities and primary healthcare providers to strengthen resilience, improve integration, and increase participation in every phase of disaster management—from readiness through to response and recovery.

We see a critical need to act — and to act together.

Disasters and climate-related events—such as extreme heat, storms, and bushfires—are having a growing impact on people’s health. These events also disrupt healthcare systems, limit access to care, and affect the broader social determinants of health—like housing, employment, and social connection—undermining long-term wellbeing.

They can also exacerbate existing medical conditions. Extreme weather and air pollution are linked to cardiovascular strain, respiratory issues, and kidney injury. Heatwaves are associated with an increase in mental health presentations, and severe events often heighten psychological distress—adding to the mental health burden on individuals and communities.

In the Country to Coast Queensland region, the frequency and severity of these events are increasing. The changing climate is already affecting the health of our communities and the resilience of our health systems.
